U-E graduate Jones wins first UFC bout
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Union-Endicott High graduate Jon Jones won his Ultimate Fighting Championship debut, defeating Andre Gusmao by unanimous decision in a 205-pound fight Saturday on the undercard of UFC 87 at the Target Center.
Jones improved to 7-0 overall in mixed martial arts competition while handing Gusmao his first loss in six matches. Judges Nelson Hamilton and Cecil Peoples scored the bout 30-27 and Jeff Mullen scored it 29-28, all for Jones.
The match for Jones was the first in a four-bout contract with the UFC. Jones was a state high school wrestling champion at U-E and also won a NJCAA national wrestling championship while at Iowa Central Community College. He made his professional debut in April.
