U-E's Armitage claims title with takedown in OT
By Mike Mangan • mmangan@gannett.com • Staff Writer • February 22, 2009
BINGHAMTON - A year ago, Union-Endicott's Chris Armitage didn't even get the chance to compete at the Section 4 Championships.
On Saturday, the junior became a Section 4 champion.
Armitage's takedown with 10 seconds left in the first overtime period gave him a 7-5 decision over Newark Valley's Ryan D'Arcy in the title match of the 112-pound weight class Saturday in the Section 4 Division I Tournament at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.
Leading 4-1 with under a minute left, Armitage seemed in relatively good shape. However, D'Arcy rallied to tie the match at 5, forcing overtime with a takedown with 15 seconds left in regulation.
Facing the first overtime match of his varsity career, Armitage managed to bounce back after losing the lead, getting the takedown that enabled him to join 14 other wrestlers to earn automatic entry into the Division I Tournament at next weekend's state tournament in Albany.
"I knew I could get the takedown in overtime," said Armitage, who didn't wrestle in last year's sectionals in part because former teammate and eventual champion Kevin Pembridge was the top seed at 103 pounds. "I was worried with 15 seconds left that D'Arcy could get the takedown, and it almost cost me.
"This just feels really good, I'm really looking forward to the state tournament."
. . .
. . . Winning their first Section 4 titles Saturday were Forks' Jacob Green
(96) and Jesse Barnett (160), Oxford's Travis Frank (189), U-E's Greg Faughnan
(215), Vestal's Ryan Jumpp (285) and Horseheads' Brant Page (119).
Four
champs power Forks to STAC crown
Blue Devils top U-E, Johnson City for team title
By Mike Mangan • mmangan@gannett.com • Staff Writer • January 25, 2009
ENDICOTT - Bolstered by four individual champions, the Chenango Forks wrestling team won its second title in three years Saturday at the Southern Tier Athletic Conference Championships at Union-Endicott High School.
Casey LaNave (125-pound weight class), Jordan Dyer (130), Rickey Bronson (145), and Jesse Villella won titles for the Blue Devils, who finished with 212 1/2 points to runner-up U-E's 192 total.
Defending champion Johnson City, which had a tournament-high five champions, finished third with 164 points and Windsor was fourth with 161 1/2 points.
Forks narrowly lost to JC at last year's STAC Championships, finishing second by 7 1/2 points, 227-219 1/2.
"Our kids wrestled really well," Forks coach Rick Gumble said. "Dyer was huge and Villella wrestled well. All the guys were focused, they made a couple of old (Forks) coaches proud."
U-E's title hopes took a hit in the semifinals, where it lost seven of 10 matches while Forks won six of nine matches. The Tigers had one champion, Brendan Ketchum at 140.
"We had a lot of head-to-head matches against (Forks), and they came out on top in a lot of them, it was a well-deserved win," U-E coach John Giacche said. "This should be good motivation for us for Sectionals."
Winning titles for JC were Josh Halladay (135), who won the Sarge Award - named after former U-E coach Frank "Sarge" Sorochinsky - as the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler, Zach Colgan (96), Sean McCormick (112), Kyle Halladay (119), and Zach McCormick (152).
Wildcats coach Pete Capone was thrilled with his team's effort, especially in light of being able to fill out just 10 of 15 weight classes with 11 wrestlers.
"We got as much out of our guys as we could get," Capone said. "I'm pleased. We have some holes but we had good kids who wrestled great."
Windsor was the only other team besides Forks and JC with multiple champions as Colton Perry (103), David Kohlbach (160) and Noah Sibley (215) won titles.
LaNave completes mission
Forks soph stays unbeaten
By Mike Mangan • mmangan@gannett.com • Staff Writer • January 25, 2009
ENDICOTT - Chenango Forks' wrestler Casey LaNave admittedly didn't feel right during the first day of competition, but come Saturday at the Southern Tier Athletic Conference Championships at Union-Endicott High School, the Blue Devils' sophomore found himself in a familiar position.
On top of the podium.
. . . Also winning titles for Forks were Jordan Dyer (130), Rickey Bronson (145), and Jesse Villella (171).
Dyer won as a fifth seed, getting a takedown with 30 seconds left in overtime for a 3-1 victory over Windsor's Ryan Hayes. In the semifinals, Dyers upset top-seeded Erik Rueckle of U-E, 4-3.
Villella cruised to his third STAC title, pinning Horseheads' Danny Manganaro in 5:31 of their title match. Villella, one of the bigger title favorites entering this weekend's tournament, was not challenged in any of his three matches.
"It's my senior year, and I was looking to finish it strong," Villella said. "Being a heavier weight as a freshman, it hasn't been easy for me to win three STAC titles."
Bronson defeated U-E's Nick Vavra, 4-2, to win the 145 crown, his second STAC title. Bronson got a takedown late in the first period and then went up 4-0 early in the second period with a reversal.
Like Dyer, U-E's Brendan Ketchum and JC's Zach Colgan won individual titles as fifth seeds.
Ketchum pleased the home fans with winning the 140 title with an 8-5 decision over Forks' Tyler Lusht, his takedown with just under a minute left sealing the victory. It was the first STAC title for Ketchum, whose father Chris also won a STAC title as a senior in 1982.
"This tournament had some significance for me," Ketchum said. "It also helped having the crowd behind me."

Forks wrestlers look to outlast Union-Endicott
All 15 No. 1 seeds advance to today's STAC semifinals
From staff reports • January 24, 2009
Through preliminary and quarterfinal rounds, Forks had 78 1/2 points to U-E's 72 1/2 points. Defending champion Johnson City was third with 61 points and Windsor fourth with 51 points.
Wrestling resumes at 10 this morning with a round of wrestlebacks, with the semifinals expected to start around 10:30 a.m. The finals will begin at 6 p.m.
Forks is seeking its second STAC title in three years, and U-E is vying for its first STAC crown since 1996. The Tigers have a tournament-high 10 semifinalists and Forks has nine.
All 15 No. 1 seeds advanced to the semifinals, including Forks' Casey LaNave, who is seeking a fourth STAC title. LaNave reached the semifinals of the 125-pound weight class with a 16-2
decision over Horseheads' Jacob Peer.
Other STAC champions from last year to reach today's semifinals were Windsor's Colton Perry (103), Johnson City's Sean McCormick (112) and Zach McCormick (152), U-E's Erik Rueckle
(130) and Justin Hyde (135), and Chenango Forks' Rickey Bronson (145) and Jesse Villella (171).
A pair of No. 2 seeds were beaten in the quarterfinals. At 171, second-seeded Josh Klepfer of Chenango Valley lost by a 10-7 decision to Ryan Sherman, and at 112 Elmira's John Chilson
dropped an 8-5 decision to Norwich's Mike Hull. The lone No. 3 seed to lose also occurred at 112, where Chenango Valley's Dustin Greene fell to Windsor's Jessy Williams by a 7-5 decision.
Couple of pins helps U-E topple CV in wrestling

Pins by Mike Bishop and Greg Faughnan helped send Union-Endicott to a 42-22 victory over visiting Chenango Valley in a non-league wrestling match between Southern Tier Athletic Conference teams Wednesday night.
Bishop and Faughnan were in close matches, then won their matches by fall. Bishop's match at 189 pounds against Justin Miller was scoreless. Then Bishop put Miller on his back and pinned him at 2 minutes, 45 seconds. Faughnan held a 1-0 lead before pinning Taylor Howard in 4:27 of their 215-pound match.
U-E's victory over CV came one day after its 49-12 victory at Ithaca clinched a third straight STAC Metro Division title.

Athletes of the Week: Rueckle's act of sportsmanship draws accolades

Erik Rueckle, Union-Endicott
* Year in school: Sophomore.
* Sport: Wrestling.
* Notable achievement: Erik Rueckle earned the Jim Howard Award as the Most Outstanding Wrestler at the Windsor Christmas Tournament a week ago Sunday after winning the individual title in the 130-pound weight class. A day later, Rueckle gave up his Most Outstanding Wrestler award to Windsor's Jesse Holton, who pinned Indian River's Derrick Gray in the 96-pound final just moments after his father, Don, was taken to the hospital after passing out during Jesse's match.
* Athlete's perspective: On giving up his award to Holton: "I didn't think twice about it," Rueckle said. "I wanted to give it to Jesse in person but I couldn't because I was going out of town, so I gave it to (Windsor) coach Jeff Nolan. What he did was really inspirational and he deserved it more than anyone else."
On his performance at the Windsor Christmas Tournament: "I think I could have done a lot better. I haven't shown my best wrestling yet, so I wasn't totally satisfied, but I can't say I wasn't happy about winning."
* Coach's perspective: "Giving up the award was something he wanted to do," U-E coach John Giacche said. "Erik's one of those kids, he always seems to make the right decision. It's great to have a kid like that."
* Windsor perspective: "It's a pretty big deal to win the tournament, so for him to give up (the MOW award), that takes a lot of character," Jesse Holton said. "It's one of the biggest tournaments that we go to, we work hard for that tournament. I won, which was great, but for him to give me the award was the best thing I could ask for."
Said Nolan: "Knowing Erik, I'm not surprised with what he did. For somebody his age to have the maturity, to show the empathy for another athlete is impressive.
When I saw him with the trophy, I'm thinking 'no way'. I know Jesse was shocked, but I couldn't be happier to give it to him."
* Immediate goal: Win a state title.
* Long-term goal: Wrestle at the collegiate level.
