December 12th, 2009

On Saturday 12/12 the Tiger's Varsity squad was at the Elmira Christmas Tournament. And while they did not
place in the top three, some of our less experienced wrestlers got some very valuable Varsity mat time.  Thomas
Babcock, Justin Hyde, Erik Rueckle, Nick Vavra, Richie Lupo and Mike Bishop were missing from the lineup
at this tournament.  They sat out to maintain eligibility as they will compete along with Tyler Hubbert and Greg
Faughnan at the prestigious Eastern States Tournament on January 8th & 9th.  Congratulations to the Owego
Indians for their well deserved first place, the Windsor Knights for taking second and Elmira who placed third.

December 13th, 2009

On Sunday 12/13 the Tigers traveled to Long Island to grapple Valley Central at Hofstra University. Valley
Central was recently crowned Section IX Division I Dual Meet Champions after winning that section's dual
meet tournament last weekend. For the second week in a row the Tigers eek out a last minute team victory in
dramatic fashion edging Valley Central by a score of 28-24.

U-E takes big early lead to handle Greene in wrestling
Staff report • December 15, 2009, 11:45 pm

ENDICOTT -- After a weekend that included both a disappointing fourth-place finish at the Elmira Christmas
Tournament as well as an impressive dual meet victory over perennially state-ranked Valley Central, Union-
Endicott High wrestling coach John Giacche wasn't sure which Tigers team would show up Tuesday night against
Greene.

Turns out a pretty darn good one.

Bolstered by key early victories, U-E defeated Greene, 38-27, in a non-league meeting of two of Section 4's
top teams.

Ramell Sledge's 8-4 decision over Tyler Schultes at 171 pounds gave U-E an insurmountable 38-15 lead with
two matches left.

But it was victories by Jon Conklin and Kevin Hughes earlier in the match that enabled U-E to take command.

Conklin's takedown with about 30 seconds remaining in the third period gave him a 4-3 victory over Jacob
Shearer in a 119-pound match, and Hughes followed with a pin of Trevor Parrish in 2 minutes, 22 seconds after
the pair wrestled a scoreless first period.

Hughes' victory gave U-E a 21-0 lead. Later in the match, U-E's Richie Lupo eked out a 1-0 decision over Brock
Kinney at 152 to put U-E up, 35-9.

"The Conklin win was really big," said Giacche, whose team was fourth of 11 teams on Saturday in Elmira before
a 28-24 victory over Valley Central on Sunday at Hofstra.

"It's early in the dual meet, and momentum's a factor," Giacche said of beating Greene. "It was a hard-fought match,
and it was a big individual victory that got us going.

"They showed me a lot tonight. This is a win to really jump start the season and hopefully carry it through the rest of
the season."

U-E is 3-0 in duals and Greene is 3-1.

Nick Wilcox (135) and Tyler Beckwith (189) won their matches by pin, but otherwise it was a night of few highlights
for the Trojans.

"I don't think we came and wrestled our best match," Tim Jenks. "Once things started rolling bad, it was a snowball
going downhill."

Power-packed wrestling field set for U-E Duals
By Mike Mangan •mmangan@gannett.com • January 1, 2010, 8:00 pm

This year's Union-Endicott Duals will offer a few new wrinkles, but one thing isn't likely to change.

The winner will most assuredly finish the season as the top-ranked wrestling team in New York state.

The most prestigious dual-meet tournament in the state, the U-E Duals takes place Saturday and Sunday at Union-Endicott
High School.

Chenango Forks and Section 5's Spencerport, which currently share the top rung in the New York State Sports Writers
Association large-school rankings, headline a strong 12-team field that includes nine state-ranked, large-school teams as well
as Greene, ranked third in the state among small schools.

Also in the field are No. 3 John Glenn of Section 11, No. 5 MacArthur of Section 8, No. 9 U-E, No. 12 Fulton of Section 3, No.
16 Brentwood of Section 11, No. 17 Minisink Valley of Section 9, and No. 18 Niagara-Wheatfield of Section 6.

Wrestling begins at 2 p.m. Saturday. On Sunday, wrestling resumes at 8:30 a.m. with the finals expected to take place at 5.

The move from a one-day to a two-day event is one of the changes for this year's tournament.

Also, instead of one bracket, the 12 teams will be divided into four three-team round-robin divisions. The four division winners
will advance to the semifinals.

Chenango Forks, Spencerport, John Glenn and MacArthur are the top four seeds and will each be in a a different division. The
rest of the teams will be selected by a blind draw.

"We want to try and get more teams more matches," U-E coach John Giacche said. "But we also wanted keep the philosophy
of the tournament the same, and that's to find out who is the best team in New York state."

The New York State Public High School Athletic Association does not have a state dual-meet championship -- the state team
champion is determined by the final rankings of the New York State Sports Writers Association -- but historically the U-E Duals
champion has finished as the top-ranked team in the state.

That was again the case last year, when Spencerport defeated Section 9's Monroe-Woodbury, 40-16, in the finals en route to its
third straight state large-school team title. It was also Spencerport's third straight U-E Duals title.

John Glenn proves worthy of top ranking in wrestling
Forks third in U-E Duals
Staff report • January 3, 2010, 10:00 pm

ENDICOTT -- Chenango Forks and Spencerport shared the top spot in the New York State Sports Writers Association large-
school wrestling rankings entering this weekend's Union-Endicott Duals.

When the next rankings come out, neither will be No. 1.

Section 11's John Glenn ended Spencerport's three-year title reign at the U-E Duals, beating its Section 5 foe, 37-10, in
Sunday's title match.

Earlier Sunday, John Glenn defeated Forks, 33-13, in a semifinal match. John Glenn entered the tournament as the third-
ranked large-school team in the state and will now most assuredly ascend to the No. 1 spot.

Forks went 2-0 in Saturday's round-robin competition to reach the semifinals, and the Blue Devils got off to a good start against
John Glenn when Rickey Bronson prevailed in overtime, 4-2, against Matt Fusaro in a 145-pound bout.

John Glenn, however, won the next five bouts and eight of the next nine matches to end any hopes of a Forks victory.

Forks defeated Section 11's Brentwood, 31-27, in the third-place match, with Bronson's 8-0 decision over Jusue Escobar in
the final match at 145 breaking a 27-all tie. Brentwood had lost its semifinal match to Spencerport, 26-20.

Greene finished fifth with its 30-28 victory over Section 8's MacArthur. Host Union-Endicott defeated Minisink Valley,  33-27,
in the seventh-place match.

January 5th, 2010

The Vestal Golden Bears manage to collect victories from Peter Reilly, Andrew Strano and Tyler Martyniak but it's not enough
for the Bears and the Tigers prevail by a score of 46-12. Union-Endicott now holds a dual meet record of 15-2 having lost by 4
points to #10 MacArthur and by 2 points to #7 Brentwood at the U-E Duals.

The Tigers are currently ranked #13 by the NYS Sports Writers Association.

January 9th, 2010

This past weekend coaches Giacche/Ruff took eight Tiger Wrestlers to one of the toughest high school wrestling tournaments in
the Northeast, the Eastern States Classic.

Looks like the boys have a ways to go before they can compete with the best of the best. Keep on working, don't get
discouraged, nothing this tough comes easy, but if you continue to shoot for the stars - who knows, you might just land
on the moon.

January 17th, 2010

Congratulations to this year's JV Stac Champions -
Jordan Mastronardi, Sammy Davis and Nathan Bomysoad!  Way to represent boys . . .

January 19th, 2010

The Tigers prevail in eleven of the thirteen contested weight classes winning eight by pin to defeat STAC Metro Division rival
Ithaca by a score of 59-12.

Union-Endicott's Hyde is Athlete of Week
By Mike Mangan - January 27, 2010, 8:10 pm

* Year in school: Senior.

* Sport: Wrestling.

* Notable achievement: Hyde won his second Southern Tier Athletic Conference wrestling title on Saturday at Johnson City,
defeating four-time champion Casey LaNave of Chenango Forks, 2-1, in overtime in the championship match of the 130-pound
weight class. Hyde, who is 37-4 this season, earned the Sarge Award -- named after former U-E coach Frank "Sarge"

Sorochinsky -- as the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler.

* Athlete's perspective: "Going in, I felt like I had nothing to lose," Hyde said. "He was expected to beat me because of the
things he's accomplished. I just gave it my all."

On his thoughts entering overtime: "I knew it was going to be tough. I pretty much knew it was going to the second overtime
period. There I felt pretty confident, I knew I could get out from under him (for the tiebreaking escape) since I did that in the
  second period.

"It's a big win; it gives me a little bit more confidence for Sectionals. Now I know I'm there in the hunt for a Section 4 title and
hopefullyI can pull it out at the end of the year.

On his improvements as a wrestler: "A couple of years ago, I wouldn't have had a close match with (LaNave) at all. All the hard
work in the offseason has helped me get to this point. In the past, I would go into matches nervous. This season, I have the
mindset that I can beat anyone if I stay calm and wrestle my best."

* Coach's perspective: "We knew it was going to be a tactical match," U-E coach John Giacche said. "The difference with Justin
this year is he's shown a much higher level of maturity. It's helped manage the match a lot better; he's hard to rattle and he's
been successful in the close matches.

"He does a lot of the little things right. He doesn't make a lot of mistakes; when you do that and you have good basics, you're
   hard to beat."

* Favorite wrestler: Cael Sanderson, undefeated four-time NCAA champion at Iowa State (2000-05) and former Olympic gold
  medalist.

* Immediate goals: Win a Section 4 title, and to help U-E win the team title at the Section 4 Division I tournament.

* Long-term goal: Wrestle at the collegiate level.
